[edit] Schedule
The meeting schedule for the UUG was discussed with a general consensus of holding the club meetings every other week on Friday at 6:00pm. Additionally it was suggested and agreed upon to hold special interest meetings in the alternating weeks at the same time, with the discretion to hold special events on as scheduling necessitates.
III. Focus of this semester was proposed and establish to include UPCON (an NMU UUG hosted Computer Science Conference with an undetermined date)
Tech talks Volunteer and Subject list:
- Thom: WASTE
- Darren: GPG
- Brian: Advanced DD Command
- Ethan: WINE
Possibly having a club sponsored movie night to watch public domain films such as “Last Man On Earth.” (acquisition sources Dap Central)
IV. The club is able to set up a TCF account to place the results of any fundraising efforts. As an incentive to refer individuals to TCF the group will receive $10 for each new account referred to the bank.
Items for the next meeting's agenda
UPCON Planning: Members are to come with ideas to have a productive planning session for our inaugural conference. Those items to be considered include:
What sessions will the conference offer
With some coordination with the department this conference has the potential to offer the opportunity to be a venue for senior projects and seed discussions. Talk to professors, especially the club advisor, for willingness to present at the conference.
Will there be a general call for presentations
Should the conference be one or two days.
The club is able to recruit sponsors. Advantages for having sponsors is added funding to pay for expenses included with the conference, it gets our name into the community in a positive light, adds a level of professionalism to the feel of our conference.
Other Fundraising possibilities include: open source lan parties (with prizes), a closed network Hack-a-thon (with prizes), referring for TCF accounts, having a small registration fee for the conference or an enterance fee for the lanparty/ hack-a-thon, a losing gala party for the conference.
Plan in advance and contact *nix groups about conference package handouts (stickers, labels, t-shirts).
Tangents Discussions: There is legislation in the works to create a mandatory National Identification card for all citizens. Discussed was the technology this would require and the additional screening process that will be done at security check points for those individuals traveling from resistant states.
A hack has been found in the Apple movie rental program. In order to avoid late fees you are able to extend the amount of time you keep a rental if you reset the calendar on your computer. It is rumored that a noninvolved person did this reset and kept a rental for an entire year.
Tech Tips: If you are ever held up at an ATM put your pin number in backwards to indicate an emergency. The cash will come out as though nothing is amiss, but the police will be called automatically.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
